James Stavridis, the former commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Europe, is scathing when it comes to the aid that the Ukrainians should receive.

The US admiral says the delivery of Western tanks to Ukraine will be “critically important” and says things should not stop there.

“I think Ukraine needs fighter jets,” he said Starfish for ZDF.

Specifically, the former senior NATO official supports the supply of Polish MiG-29 and American F-16 fighter jets to the Ukrainian military.

According to Stavridis, the MiG-29s can be delivered directly, as the Ukrainians know how to operate them.

As for the second type of aircraft, this scheme will take more time, but Ukrainian pilots could quickly learn to fly the American plane, because the F-16, “is a relatively simple aircraft, easy to learn.”

Regarding the supply of Western tanks to Ukraine, Starfish says that this type of weaponry is important for ground combat, regardless of which NATO country the tanks come from.

However, according to him, Russian attackers are more successful “in the sky” than on the ground. Therefore, Ukraine should continue to receive support in the protection of its airspace.

“That means, for example, batteries Patriot which are provided by the United States and then possibly by Germany,” Stavridis said.

At the same time, the former commander shares the assessment of the US Chief of Staff, Mark Milley, regarding the progress of the war. “The problem of Crimea, in particular, will be very difficult,” he said Starfish.

The Minister of Economy and the Vice-Chancellor of Germany, Robert Habek, spoke in favor of the delivery of Polish Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine.
