Footage From Switzerland Of Tourists Skiing In The Mud, Symbol Of A Snowless Winter In Europe. “The Planet Is Actually Burning”

A clip of skiers walking through mud at the bottom of a slope has garnered nearly 670,000 views on TikTok. They are images from the resort of Wengen, located in the Swiss Alps. “The skiing season in Switzerland is different, instead of a winter landscape, the slopes are green with a few areas of snow,” writes the Swiss website Switzerland Times.

Wengen is a small town at a high altitude of 1,200 meters, nestled in the slopes of the Bernese Oberland area. The easiest way to get there is from the bottom, from the valley, by cable car. Now, there is no natural snow up there.

People’s reactions to the footage of the skiers in the mud have been numerous. “There is no winter sport anymore. Better go by bike or for a walk”, is one of the comments.

The shock was very big even if the mud is only at the base of the slopes, because the resort administrators used the snow cannons so as not to lose the tourists completely.

“It’s only on a 20-30 meter stretch, the rest of the slope was covered in snow,” the resort’s tourism director Rolf Wegmuller told the Swiss publication.

The same happened in other resorts in Switzerland, where the pictures at the base of the slopes do not at all give the impression that winter sports can be practiced.

The month of January also brought temperature records, from France to Poland, reports Reuters. In Hungary, the thermometers registered, on January 1, 18.9 degrees Celsius, while in France, New Year’s Day was marked by temperatures of almost 25 degrees Celsius, being the warmest in history.

In Germany too, temperatures of over 20 degrees Celsius have recently been recorded. The Meteorological Service reported that such a change had not been observed in the country since the beginning of weather records, i.e. since 1881.

And in Bilbao, in the north of Spain, it was over 25 degrees Celsius. “It always rains a lot here, it’s very cold. But now it’s January and it’s like summer,” said 81-year-old Bilbao resident Eusebio Folgeira.

Another tourist said she is enjoying the weather, but she is worried at the same time. “It’s beautiful weather, but we know that the Planet is actually burning. We enjoy the weather, but at the same time we are afraid,” said Joana Host.

Warning from experts

Snow-free resorts, but also high temperatures in January are what climatologists call the new normal in Europe.

“Winters are getting warmer because of global warming,” Freja Vamborg, a climatologist at the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, told Reuters.

For his part, Robert Vautard, director of the Pierre-Simon Laplace Institute in France, said that unusually warm temperatures could be recorded in the coming period. “This is actually a relatively long-lasting event,” Vautard said.
