An extraordinary European Council will be convened on February 9-10 in Brussels, and migration could be on the discussion agenda, along with other pressing topics, including energy, informs Politico.eu, citing several European diplomats.
EU leaders will again discuss what Europe can do in the face of high energy prices, but also in the face of competition from the US, which heavily subsidizes green energy. However, the subject of migration could also be on the agenda of the discussions.
Several EU countries, including Belgium and Austria, have been pushing for months to put migration on the agenda of EU talks at the highest level, but so far this has yet to happen and it is not yet confirmed that it will happen in February, but there is this possibility, POLITCO mentions, according to News.ro.
For Romania, the discussion about migration is all the more important as Austria has given signals that it would be willing to lift its veto regarding Schengen accession, if new decisions are made regarding migration and asylum policy.
President Klaus Iohannis announced on Thursday evening, after the European Council meeting, that “steps in the right direction” were taken regarding the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area. “My conclusion is simple – all the actors understood that we have a problem that needs to be solved”, added the head of state, who also said that his expectation is that Romania will enter Schengen during 2023.
President Klaus Iohannis also said that he discussed Romania’s accession to Schengen with the Swedish Prime Minister, considering that Sweden will take over the presidency of the European Council for the next six months. “I had a discussion with the Swedish prime minister, I presented the problem to him, he understood it very well. Of course he did not make a firm commitment, in a discussion that was a first exploratory discussion, but I am convinced that, when the two issues – the Austrian vote and the Dutch vote – receive a clarification, the matter will be immediately on the agenda of the JHA Council”, declared Klaus Iohannis in Brussels.
