The European Union intends to take a series of urgent measures to mitigate the consequences of a possible cessation of gas supplies from Russia, the community’s largest supplier, the Bloomberg news agency said today, referring to a draft European Commission document.

To save gas, the European Commission recommends that community members switch to a different type of fuel. The draft document also states that the governments of EU member states must encourage the reduction of consumption by large companies.

Moreover, European governments need to conduct information campaigns among the population in order to reduce the use of heating and cooling systems. In extreme cases, mandatory energy consumption limits will be introduced. The European Commission considers that “the gas situation in the EU is at a critical stage”.

“Timely decisions can reduce the impact of a sudden disruption in gas supplies by a third,” the draft document said. Changes can be made to the draft document, Bloomberg notes.
