This year, the packages preferred by tourists are no longer the cheapest ones. Romanians prefer variants of tourist packages to 4 and even 5 star hotels. The top of reservations for winter holidays domestically is led by Prahova Valley.

A study conducted by the tour operator IRI Travel, with the help of reseller partners from all over the country, shows that the behavior of Romanian tourists has changed a lot, both compared to the period before the pandemic, and compared to the same period last year.

“Of those who do not go abroad for vacation, 60% will go to Romanian mountain resorts. We received many requests for quotations for resorts with slopes such as Azuga, Busteni, Rânca and Straja. Also, there are a lot of requests for Poiana Brașov this year. Compared to last year, reservations started in September, for the winter holidays, but it continues today, given the still unclear situation, although the COVID incidence rate is the lowest in Europe. We expect a relaxation, during the holidays “, says Lucian Bădîrcea, CEO of the tour operator.

Until this date, the booking level for the Christmas and New Year period is about 70%, compared to only 25-30% in the same period last year, respectively 90-95%, as it was in the same period in 2019.

The packages preferred by tourists are no longer the cheap ones, but Romanians prefer variants of tourist packages to four- and even five-star hotels.

The top of the reservations for the winter holidays, internally is led by Prahova Valley – especially Sinaia and Poiana Brașov, followed by the spa resorts Băile Herculane and Băile Felix, respectively by the rural tourism areas Bucovina and Maramureș.

Externally, Egypt is in first place, and in the top of the demand follow the ski holidays in Bulgaria – Bansko and Borovets, or Austria and Italy.

As a typology of the tourist, the vast majority of travelers are, during this period, vaccinated and hold a green certificate. There is a radical change, in the sense that now tourists are much more willing to choose more distant, warm destinations to a greater extent. They still prefer all inclusive and opt especially for hotels of at least 4 stars.

For the holidays, tourists choose packages with all meals included, with festive dinners, access to centers and spa and relaxation facilities. This year, on the occasion of the winter holidays, the tariffs increased compared to the same period last year.

For example, New Year’s Eve in a 5-star hotel in Egypt, with a plane ticket included, reaches 740 euros per person. A New Year’s Eve in Sinaia, in a 4-star hotel, costs 1,780 lei per person.
