The visit of the head of European diplomacy had not been announced in advance. Josep “Borrell will travel to Tehran on Friday night to meet with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other Iranian officials,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzadeh said in a statement.
“The visit, which is part of ongoing consultations between Iran and the European Union, will focus on bilateral relations, some regional and international issues, as well as the progress of negotiations on lifting sanctions” imposed on Iran, the statement said.
Enrique Mora, the EU negotiator responsible for coordinating talks on the Iranian nuclear issue, posted a photo on Twitter on Thursday night of a Brussels dinner attended by him, Josep Borrell, and US Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley, along with the message: “In-depth conversation about JCPOA and regional prospects in the Middle East. Malley reaffirmed the US commitment to return to the agreement.”
JCPOA is the name given to the 2015 agreement on limiting Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for reduced sanctions. The United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and reintroduced US sanctions against Iran.
Talks in the Austrian capital, which began in April 2021, are aimed at bringing the United States back to the 2015 agreement, including by lifting sanctions against Iran, and ensuring Tehran’s full compliance with its commitments. Negotiations have stalled due to differences between Tehran and Washington.
