Recently, Volodymyr Zelensky sent a new message to the citizens of Ukraine, but also to Europe, about his country’s chances of receiving a positive response on the status of a candidate country for accession to the European Union. The Ukrainian leader is more motivated than ever to do everything in his power to positively influence the European Council’s response.

Attacks on Ukraine continue

The hope of ending the war soon seems more and more unrealizable, as the Ukrainian army feels exhausted by Russia’s continued attacks. In recent days, Vladimir Putin’s troops have destroyed several targets in Ukraine, mainly attacking the eastern cities of Severodonetsk and Lysiceansk, respectively.

Despite the huge losses suffered, the Ukrainian leader hopes for a better future, provided by the support he could receive in the European Union, in the event that Ukraine would receive the green light on its accession to the political union that counts in present 27 states.

We remind you that Volodymyr Zelensky applied to join the EU four days after the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops, and on Friday, the European Commission recommended that Ukraine receive candidate status.

This week, the leaders of the 27 member states of the union will consider the possibility of Ukraine joining the EU in a summit, despite the reluctance of some member states.

“It simply came to our notice then. One week in which we will receive the European Union’s response on the status of candidate for Ukraine.

We have already received a positive decision from the European Commission and at the end of the new week we will receive a response from the European Council. (..) I am convinced that only a positive decision is in the interest of the whole of Europe.

I will give my speeches this week, including to Europeans. I will take every opportunity to support the European perspective for Ukraine, for each of us, and to gather supporters for us, “Volodymyr Zelensky said.

UN Secretary-General, urgent appeal to the West

On Sunday, Jens Stoltenberg gave an interview to Bild am Sonntag, in which he warned Western states about the length of the war. NATO Secretary-General has called on all countries to get involved in this war for the peace of Ukraine, with the goal of winning it, while aiming for European security.

“We have to prepare for the fact that it could take years. We must not give up our support for Ukraine. Even if the costs are high, not only in terms of military support, but also because of rising energy and food prices, ”Stoltenberg warned.

The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who recently visited Kiev, also warned of the risk to Ukraine and the whole of Europe if the country attacked does not receive aid faster than the Russians.

“Ukraine receives weapons, equipment, ammunition and training faster than the invader. Time is the lifeblood.
It will all depend on whether Ukraine can strengthen its ability to defend its soil faster than Russia can renew its ability to attack, “Boris Johnson wrote in a Sunday Times article.
