The creation of Novaia Gazeta Europe comes nine days after the Moscow editorial office of the publication suspended its activity. The publication, led by Nobel Peace Prize-winning publisher Dmitry Muratov, has been repeatedly threatened with closure for reporting on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The editor-in-chief of Novaia Gazeta Europe, Kirill Martynov, said the newspaper would be independent of Russia’s Novaia Gazeta, “both legally and professionally.” The newsroom itself will consist of Novaia Gazeta employees who have chosen to leave Russia.

“No one will work for Novaya Gazeta and Novaya Gazeta Europe at the same time,” Martynov told The Moscow Times on Thursday. “We will have our own editorial board and our own guidelines,” he said.

The new title will cover events in Russia in both Russian and English, in an attempt to reach both domestic and international audiences. Martynov, who is currently in Riga, said the publication is also considering launching a Latvian edition.

“We want to show the local community that we do not have this imperialist complex; we don’t expect people to speak Russian where we come from, “Martynov explained.

Although Novaia Gazeta Europe will be officially launched next week, its Telegram channel, Instagram and Twitter account are already up and running. Martynov says the team of journalists tried to settle in as soon as possible so that they could continue to cover Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Romanian state lets Elena Udrea escape for the second time. Instead, the “organs” are watching Emilia Șercan

“We believe that our readers are people who care about the fate of Russia, the current events, the catastrophe we are witnessing now,” he said.

“I think we have to fight for the Russian voice that opposes war, both in Europe and globally. Given that less than five months have passed between receiving the Nobel Peace Prize (by editor-in-chief Muratov, no.) And the closure of Novaia Gazeta, I feel we need to learn some lessons, raise the stakes and create something global. ” , Martynov explained.

The Moscow Times notes that it is unclear at this time whether Muratov took part in the creation of Novaya Gazeta Europe. “We cannot disclose this for security reasons,” Martynov said.

Founded in 1993, the Russian publication Novaia Gazeta has long covered politically sensitive topics, including Chechen wars, corruption, the terrorist attack on the North Ost, and the persecution of the LGBTQ + community in Russia.

But Martynov says he is not afraid of possible persecution.

“We will, of course, establish safety protocols for the people who work for us. They will choose whether to publish under their own name, “Martynov said. “I chose. The current events are so horrible that it is too late for me to be afraid of a criminal case “, the journalist confessed.
