Russia’s participation in the Human Rights Council “is a hoax” and it is time for the UN General Assembly to suspend the country from the UN forum, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told a news conference on Monday to Bucharest.

She added that “the brutal, horrific attacks on civilians, documented yesterday by journalists in Bucea, shocked the whole world and brought it to reality”, showing that “members of the Russian forces committed war crimes in Ukraine”.

Thomas-Greenfield spoke about the steps that will be taken to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council.

“We believe that Russia must be held accountable. I am returning to New York to do two things: one – I will go to the Security Council tomorrow morning and address Russia’s actions firmly and directly; two – in close coordination with Ukraine, European countries and other UN partners, we will demand suspension from the Human Rights Council “, the diplomat pointed out.

The diplomat recalled that 140 UN states had condemned Russia and called for swift, additional efforts.

“The images from Bucea and the disaster on the territory of Ukraine require us to rise to the level of action statements. We cannot allow a subversive Member State with all our fundamental principles to continue to be in the Human Rights Council. Russia should not have a position of authority there, nor should we allow Russia to use its role in the Council as a propaganda tool to suggest that it has any legitimate human rights concerns. In fact, we see every day, including yesterday, reports about how little they care about human rights. Russia’s participation in the Human Rights Council is a farce. It hurts the credibility of the Council at the UN in general. It’s just wrong. That is why we believe it is time for the UN General Assembly to suspend it, “said Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

Before talking to the press, she met with Ukrainian refugees at the North Station.
