Polish ruling party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski has said Germany is trying to turn the European Union into a federalist “Fourth Reich”, writes The Guardian.

In a statement to the Polish far-right newspaper GPC, the leader of the Law and Justice Party (PiS) said that some countries “are not excited about the prospect of a German Fourth Reich built on EU bases,” according to The Guardian.

“If we Poles agreed with such submission today, we would be degraded in many ways,” said Kaczynski, who is also deputy prime minister.

He added that the EU Court of Justice is being used as a “tool” for federalist purposes.

Poland is facing a lasting confrontation with the European Union, mainly due to the reform of the legal system that the PiS party started in 2015.

The EU announced this week that it has launched an infringement procedure against Poland for ignoring European laws and undermining the independence of the judiciary.

In reply, Warsaw challenged in its own Constitutional Court the European mechanism by which the granting of Community funds is conditional on respect for the rule of law.
