The United States said on Friday it was ready to discuss Russia’s proposals to drastically limit US and NATO influence in its neighborhood, again warning that an invasion of Ukraine by Moscow would have “massive” consequences, according to AFP.
“We are ready to discuss,” even though “the documents (of the treaty proposals made public by Russia, note) include certain things that the Russians know are unacceptable,” a senior US official told reporters.
But “if there is more aggression in Ukraine, it will have massive consequences and will be very costly,” added the senior official, who requested anonymity.
Russia on Friday unveiled a series of security assurances from the West, including promises to renounce all military activity in Ukraine and Eastern Europe and not to further expand the NATO military alliance, Reuters reports.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the United States had seen Russia’s proposals and would consult with European countries: “There will be no talks on European security without our European allies and partners.”
