Our country is a wonderful and very attractive place, from a tourist point of view. Romania is the only country in Europe and among the few in the world where there are mountains, sea and delta, tourists are always delighted by the extraordinary landscapes, delicious food and history-laden locations they visit, year after year. Which is the hidden place in Romania where there is a huge statue, the size of the Arc de Triomphe.

The statue of Jesus in Romania is as tall as the Arc de Triomphe

Bran Castle, People’s House, Sphinx and Babel, Peles Castle, these are just some of the most impressive buildings and monuments known in Romania. However, few know that the statue of Jesus in Rio de Janeiro has a smaller “little brother,” right in the heart of Harghita.

10 years ago, in 2011, on the Gordon Hill in Harghita, located between Odorheiu Secuiesc and Praid, the Heart of Jesus was erected, the largest statue of the Savior in Eastern Europe. It is made by the artist Zavaczky Walter.

The impressive monument is about 22 meters high. You look at her and she’s out of breath. It is made of iron and stainless steel, and its construction cost 200,000 euros, money paid from donations raised by the town hall of Lupeni commune.

To give you a small impression of how tall, in fact, the statue of Jesus in Romania is, the monument is 5 meters less than the imposing Triumphal Arch in the Capital, which measures 27 meters high.

Inside the statue of the Heart of Jesus in Harghita are metal spiral staircases, where tourists can climb to the top to enjoy a fairytale view, especially in winter.

The legend behind the statue of the Heart of Jesus in Harghita

For storytellers, it seems that the statue of Jesus in Romania is shrouded in mystery. Legend has it that in the Gordon Hill area there were always strong floods, as a result of which hundreds of people fell victim to natural disasters.

A certain Mr. Gordon, the owner of the dairy company of the same name in the area, wanted to save his business and erected this imposing statue to protect the community in Lupeni and, at the same time, his own company.

Gordon raised money for the construction of the statue from donations raised by the town hall in Lupeni. Unfortunately, he did not enjoy the Heart of Jesus because he died shortly after the grand statue was unveiled.
