According to the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), in December, unusual temperatures for this month, of over 15-20 degrees Celsius, can be recorded, if in the area of ​​our country tropical air masses enter, which produce spectacular increases of thermal values.

“The beginning of winter, December, is characterized by a wide range of meteorological phenomena: snow associated with wind intensifications causes the production of blizzard, a phenomenon that occurs most often in the Muntenia Plain, Dobrogea and eastern Moldova; persistent fog, especially in the plain areas and in depressions and less often, sleet and rain “, specify the NMA specialists.

“The ridge of the Eastern European anticyclone, which extends over southeastern Europe and, to some extent, the Mediterranean cyclones, will begin to have a special influence on our country. The air temperature marks a decrease, on average, by 4-6 degrees Celsius, compared to the last month of autumn “, transmit the ANM specialists.

The average temperature drops to about minus 6 and minus 4 degrees Celsius in the depressions in eastern Transylvania. In mountainous areas, the average air temperature reaches values ​​of minus 8 and minus 6 degrees Celsius, with great extension in the Eastern Carpathians, but also in the Southern Carpathians where, at the highest altitudes, it drops below minus 8 degrees Celsius.

The absolute minimum temperature of December, in Romania, is minus 34.5 degrees Celsius, registered at Întorsura Buzăului, on December 25, 1998.

“Even in December, but less frequently, tropical air masses enter the area of ​​our country, producing spectacular increases in thermal values. In such synoptic conditions, high maximum temperatures, unusual for this month, can be recorded, above 15-20 degrees Celsius, as happened in 1989, 1985, 1960, 1957, 1903, etc. The warmest months of December were: 1979, 1982, 2015, 2019, 2020, etc. ” , meteorologists transmit.

Regarding the precipitation regime of this month, it is characterized by higher monthly average quantities in the western part of the country due to the advections of humid air from the Mediterranean Sea and lower, on average, by 10-20 mm in the eastern one.

Values ​​of multiannual average rainfall over 50 mm are found in the Western Carpathians, the northern Eastern Carpathians and the western Southern Carpathians where, in small areas, they can exceed 75 mm, according to ANM.

The absolute maximum monthly amount of precipitation in December, recorded at the meteorological stations in Romania, is 349.4 mm, at Stâna de Vale, in 1993.
