Travel leaders from countries worldwide will hold a meeting next month in order to invest in the travel and tourism industry’s sustainable future.
The Summit, which is the largest event that brings together tourism Ministers, will be held on November 2 in London. It will welcome leaders, entrepreneurs and experts from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the World Travel & Tourism Council and World Travel Market (WTM), SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
In this regard, previously, the Council of the European Union urged the EU Commission and its Member States to introduce a mutual European Agenda for Tourism 2030/2050 in order to strengthen competitiveness and help the green tourism ecosystem in Europe.
For over ten years, UNWTO and WTM have cooperated in order to host a high-level summit that would bring into focus the key challenges that the travel and tourism industry is facing as well as the new opportunities that would help this sector.
This year, the Summit will also be focused on the sustainable future of this sector and the important role that ‘green investment’ would play to achieve this objective.
“We know how much destinations rely on the tourism industry for economic growth, jobs and wellbeing. Yet at the same time, this well being is being threatened by weather that is becoming more extreme – as witnessed in recent news coverage of floods, heat waves, wildfires and other phenomena,” WTM London Exhibition Director, Simon Press, pointed out in this regard.
In addition, Press added that immediate action is needed to establish a sustainable future for all people who rely on the travel and tourism industry.
At the same time, UNWTO Director-General Zurab Pololikashvili has stressed that the WTM provides UNWTO with a unique platform in order to bring together the political impact of governments as well as public sector leaders and the private sectors’ dynamism.
“The Ministers’ Summit 2021 could not be more timely and will provide a blueprint for promoting investments in the future of sustainability, one of UNWTO’s main priorities as we guide the global restart of the sector,” Pololikashvili has emphasized.
WTTC President & CEO Julia Simpson has stressed that the main purpose of sustainable tourism is to increase the benefits and diminish the negative impacts provoked by tourism for destinations while adding that the Summit will look forward to finding the needs of travellers, the industry, the environment and host communities.
