The vote took place on Tuesday, and the results were announced on Wednesday.

“The Union’s current policies are promoting agricultural models that are adversely affecting the environment and are beginning to encourage the import of unsustainable products. We are proposing concrete measures to ensure that our food system once again respects the limits of the planet. “Intensive livestock farming and monocultures that use large amounts of pesticides. A sustainable food system is also crucial for the future of farmers,” said MEP Anja Hazekamp, ​​rapporteur for the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.

The “From Farm to Consumer” strategy was unveiled in May 2020 by the European Commission and is still the subject of legislative proposals.

MEPs emphasized the need for sound and scientific ex ante evaluations of the impact of any such proposals, and during the plenary debate, many regretted the Commission’s late publication of the Joint Research Center’s report on the impact of the Farm to Consumer Strategy.

The text also calls for “solutions to the excessive consumption of meat and food with a high degree of processing and a high content of salt, sugar and fat, including by setting maximum levels of daily intake” as well as “the gradual abandonment of the use of cages for animal husbandry in the Union “.

The European Parliament is due to vote in November on the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which for the time being does not include the objectives of the “From Farm to Consumer” strategy.
